Jesus said that Moses permitted the Jewish men to divorce their wives because of the hardness of their hearts, so what did He mean by that?

This will be I think our fourth one discussing marriage and divorce as we’re working our way through Jesus’ sixth, “You have heard, but I say to you,” statements. I saved this one for last because it is the one where interpreters are most apt to claim that Jesus was changing the standards found in the law of Moses. I’m taking a different course, as you know if you’ve watched already, that Jesus was reiterating standards that were already there, and that what was true when Jesus spoke these words on the Sermon on the Mount was true during the law of Moses.

So, what did the Scribes and Pharisees believe about divorce and remarriage? Stay tuned.

Welcome to today’s Little Lesson, one more special Cuba edition. We’re looking at the sixth of Jesus’s six “You have heard but I say to you” statements found in the Gospel of Matthew in the Sermon on the Mount. We’ve covered five already. In every case Jesus was clearly not changing moral standards; He was reiterating what could easily be found in the Old Testament, the Law of Moses, which, I’ve said all this over and over again, so I’m not going to say it again.

Hi, welcome to today’s Little Lesson and this is a special Cuba edition. I’m spending a little over a week here checking up on some projects under the banner of the Ministries of Heaven’s Family. I stayed last night in this beautiful house. This is the courtyard of a home that’s almost 200 years old.

What should you do when someone who hates you needs your help? It’s been such a joy as we’ve been working our way through that part of the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus six times said, “You have heard it was said but I say to you.”

I can’t review every single day because that would take up all of our time but we’re in the sixth of those six statements and once again it’s crystal clear that Jesus was not as some claim raising the standard to a higher moral standard under the New Covenant than what was found under the Old Covenant.

For how long has God been expecting people to love their enemies? We’re continuing to work our way through Matthew chapter five, and specifically Jesus’s “You have heard, but I say to you” statements, and we’re in the sixth of those six, where Jesus said, “You’ve heard it said love your neighbor, hate your enemy.” That’s Matthew 5:43.

In our last lesson, I made it very clear, proved it that Jesus didn’t say, “God said.” He said, “You have heard it was said,” and only part of what he quotes did God ever say, that is, “Love your neighbor.” God never said, “Hate your enemies.” Then Jesus of course says, “But I say to you …” So here’s his counterpoint to the false teaching that his followers had previously heard from the scribes and Pharisees, and that becomes obvious as we keep reading here.
